The founder survived 11 years of severe anorexia. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, particularly anorexia nervosa, yet receive only 1% of all mental health research funding. There is also a significant philanthropic gap: unlike in some other illnesses, where public donations drive most research, public donations account for only about 4% of mental health research funding. Eating disorders remain the most misunderstood and stigmatised mental health conditions, often mistaken for vanity, choice, or lack of appetite.
