I CAN DO IT©️ Artefact 04

One Artefact. One memoir. One Story. One Reminder.

I can do it

For eleven years, I wouldn’t go into grocery stores. If my mom tried to take me in, I would wait outside. Hide. Make sure no one saw me or connected me to food. The idea of walking through those doors meant I was giving up. Admitting I needed to eat.

I wasn’t ready for that.

But recovery doesn’t wait for you to be ready. It just asks: what if you did it anyway?

So one day I walked in. No plan. No certainty I could do it. Just the decision that staying outside wasn’t an option anymore. I did it. And I kept doing it.

Now I carry groceries home in a bag that says “I can do it” because that’s what it took. Not motivation. Not a perfect reason. Just the decision to move through the fear.

“I can do it” isn’t confidence. It’s not even belief. It’s the decision to find out what happens when you move forward anyway. It’s understanding that your mind is smarter than your fear. That it is beautiful. That it will find the way, not because you have all the answers, but because you’ve shown up enough times to know you’ll figure it out.

Every time you do something you’re afraid of, you’re not just completing a task. You’re rewiring your brain. You are collecting evidence of your capability. The only thing between you and your life is the willingness to walk through the door, even when you are terrified and scarred. Even when you don’t feel like you can.

Because you can.

This bag is for your grocery store. Whatever that is. The thing you can’t do. The place you’re afraid to walk into. The conversation you can’t have. The day you can’t get out of bed but need to anyway.

You can do it. Not because you’re special. Not because you have all the answers. But because you’re capable of more than your fear tells you.

Carry it.

This bag is a proud celebration of my recovery. It is the victory of walking into a place I used to fear, holding my head high. It would make me happy if it could be a reminder that, whatever your“grocery store” is, you can do it, too.

Not because you are ready. Not because you have a plan. Because you have learned that the only thing between you and what needs to happen is the decision to move anyway. For carrying yourself through the things you are afraid of.

When the world feels heavy and your mind says “I can’t,” this bag says otherwise. It’s the simplest mantra for the hardest days. Throw your life into it and keep moving. If I can do it, you can do it too.
